How install Plex?
#1
To install Plex, you'll need to set up the Plex Media Server on a computer or NAS device, and then install the Plex client apps on the devices you want to stream to. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Install Plex Media Server
The Plex Media Server is the core of Plex, where your media is stored and served to other devices.
Download Plex Media Server:
Go to the Plex download page.
Choose the appropriate version for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, NAS, or Docker).
Install Plex Media Server:
Windows/macOS: Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
Linux: Use the package manager specific to your distribution (e.g.,

sudo dpkg -i plexmediaserver.deb
sudo apt-get install -f
NAS: Install Plex from the NAS’s app center (Synology, QNAP, etc.).
Launch Plex Media Server:
Once installed, the Plex server runs in the background. You can access its interface through a web browser by going to:
http://localhost:32400/web
or
http://<your-server-IP>:32400/web
.
Set Up Your Library:
Create a Plex account (or log in if you already have one).
Add your media folders by going to Library > Add Library, selecting the type of media (movies, TV shows, music, etc.), and choosing the folders on your hard drive where your media files are stored.
Step 2: Install Plex Client Apps
Plex client apps let you access and stream media from your Plex Media Server on different devices.
Download Plex App:
Go to the app store on your device and search for Plex. You can install the Plex app on many devices, including:
Smart TVs (Samsung, LG, etc.)
Mobile devices (iOS, Android)
Streaming devices (Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Chromecast)
Gaming consoles (PlayStation, Xbox)
Alternatively, you can download the apps from Plex’s official site.
Log Into Your Plex Account:
Once the app is installed, open it and log into your Plex account. It will automatically connect to your Plex Media Server.
Start Streaming:
After logging in, you’ll see your Plex libraries. Simply select the media you want to stream, and enjoy!
Optional Step: Plex Pass Subscription
If you want additional features like offline syncing, live TV & DVR, premium music streaming, and more, you can subscribe to Plex Pass. This is a paid premium service that enhances the Plex experience but is not required for basic usage.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Firewall Configuration: If you're using Plex remotely, ensure that the firewall on the server allows traffic on port 32400 (used by Plex).
Remote Access: To stream media from outside your home, make sure Remote Access is enabled in Plex settings (
Settings > Server > Remote Access
).
NAS Setup: For NAS installations, follow the specific instructions in the app center or documentation for that NAS.
After following these steps, Plex will be ready to stream your personal media collection to any of your devices!
