So I got a letter in the mail yesterday from the Law Offices of Darren J. Devlin regarding a debt I honestly don't even recognize. It says I owe a certain amount, but I have no memory of this account and I'm pretty sure I never had business with the original creditor they mentioned.
I'm trying not to panic, but this is the first time I've dealt with something like this. From what I've been reading online, I think I have the right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receiving the letter. I've seen that I should send a written dispute and ask for debt validation – basically make them prove that I actually owe this and that they have the legal right to collect it.
What's concerning me is that they didn't include much detail in the letter about the original debt or how it was calculated. Just a total amount and a generic statement about contacting them to resolve it.
Has anyone else received a letter from this firm for a debt they didn't recognize? Did you dispute it? How did it turn out? Also, if I do end up owing something, is it better to try and negotiate a settlement or just pay it in full? I really don't want this to affect my credit if it's not even legitimate.
I'm located in MA if that matters. Any advice from people who have been through this would be amazing. Thanks everyone.
